Hey everyone! This is my first review on our awesome new watch forum. I love feedback so please let me know what you think.
A few weeks ago Kristin and I were browsing Amazon, having been inspired by Elliott and his Seiko 5 watch. We figured it was time we acquired a watch that she could wear full time and I could also enjoy as well. It didn't take long for us to stumble across this 42mm Sports model with the blue dial on a canvas strap. It ticked all the right boxes for us and was only $138 CAD to boot! The order was placed and it arrived last week. Since Kristin is in Chicago this month I've been wearing it around and getting a feel for this blue beauty. Here are some of my observations so far:
- This watch has a nice light feel to it. I'm sure due in part to the canvas strap as I'm used to metal bracelets on most of my other watches. It sits low on the wrist and wears very comfortable. I've worn it primarily with casual attire so far where it seems most at home. This morning as I sit here and write in blue jeans and a black cotton sweater (fall is upon us!) the blue Seiko looks right at home. I would call it "premium casual".
- We are really excited to obtain a variety of different straps for this watch. Kristin has already been scouring Chicago and I wouldn't be surprised if she comes home with more than a couple of bright colours in her carry-on.
- The clear case back reveals a solid looking automatic movement, Seiko's in house 7S36 23 Jewel workhorse, very much a selling feature of this watch. I'm not much for clear case back watches however it is fun to watch the mechanism work away.
- The dial is highly legible and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the luminous markers at night. The watch is as readable as my Rolex GMT in the dark. I also enjoy that the outer ring of markers is raised above the inset dial with the numbers and Day-Date display. This gives the watch a nice texture and depth. There is a lot going on here with large san-serif numbers for 1 - 12 hours, smaller inset numbers for a 24 hour clock, the outer ring minute markers and Day-Date window (not to mention the brand and model text). Seiko pulls it off nicely taking advantage of the 42mm real estate available.
- The watch proclaims 100m water resistance and the feel of the case would seem to agree with that however it is the crown that does not. It spins lightly in the closed setting and has a significant visible gap between itself and the case. Handling it does not give the impression that water would be sufficiently blocked. I would be wary about diving into the deep end with this one.
Overall, the Seiko 5 Sports has been easy to live with and has the potential for fun combinations in the future. I look forward to your questions and comments below. Of course you will also be able to see it at our next gathering, whenever that might be.
Cheers,
