This is officially the smallest movement I've worked on. It's a tiny little Elgin I picked at a garage sale. I decided if I could get it apart and back together again I could strip down anything. Well.... It's running great and I have a definite feeling of confidence for some future movements.

That is very tiny! What kind of resources do you use knowing where and what to do when stripping these down? What kind of books/forums are you using?

An excellent place to start is www.watchrepairtalk.com. He's got plenty of videos and explains things really well. As far as stripping them down, most watches are fairly similar in how they work. The movement designs change but the basics are the same from watch to watch so once you've done a couple you know what to look for. Have you ordered those tools yet?

I have not but will be soon. I forgot to show you some of the older pocket watches I have too. Also I need to get you that Raketa. Did you want it before the next meeting?

Dylan I was just on the Perrin site (perrin.ca) and it just so happens the kit is currently on sale. If you're interested now might be the time to make your move. The tools certainly aren't the greatest but they're more than good enough to get you started.

You don't want to take a crack at working on the Raketa? The price you paid makes it ideal as a practice piece down the road a bit. Bring it out to the next meeting and we'll have a look. What are your pocket watches?

I will have to dig out the pocket watches and see. Some Canadian brand. The Raketa is all yours, we can call it a trade for that movement you gave me to work on. I will bring the other watches out for the next meeting. If I get them out before then I will post some photos. Unfortunately they sat in a box in a garage for 40 years so they are a bit rough. I wonder what kind of things we will toss aside that future generations will think are neat?

A couple of model names were Dax and Pocket Ben. They were pretty much made and priced to be disposable. When they stopped working you tossed them.
